Set up SocratiCode with Gemini CLI

Register the SocratiCode MCP server with Gemini CLI, index one project, and verify a first codebase search.

What you need

The server uses the default local Qdrant and Ollama stack.

Register the MCP server

Add SocratiCode for your Gemini CLI user:

gemini mcp add --scope user socraticode npx -y --prefer-online socraticode@latest

Start a new Gemini CLI session in the project. Run gemini mcp list in the terminal to confirm the SocratiCode server is connected, then request codebase_status in the session.

Index and verify one project

Ask Gemini to run codebase_index for the current project. Check codebase_status until indexing completes, then use codebase_search for a function or feature you know is present.

Open one returned source location and confirm it belongs to the expected project. The default watcher handles later file changes while the MCP process is running.

Update the connection

Restart Gemini after a SocratiCode release so the MCP server reconnects and npx resolves the current package.

For sensitive projects, review source-code boundaries before indexing. For a system split across repositories, read cross-repository context.
